Dragoons with optional insignia. |
#5504 M-1855 US Forage Cap -
Dark Blue wool with a branch of service colored welt (piping)
around the crown– Dragoon shown at left. Black cotton lining. Earlier
Shako style wide brims were typically used. Our brim is 9 ounce
supple leather. Also, a smaller brim was
introduced– probably to save costs– see Cavalry cap in enlargement.
Leather chin strap with brass slide. US Eagle buttons on the side.

Historical Info... In 1855 when the
Cavalry branch was organized, Dragoons were instructed to wear the
crossed saber insignia with saber tips "pointed down", where as Cavalry
were to wear the insignia saber tips "pointed up".
